This crockpot Bavarian pretzel ham and Swiss sandwich recipe boasts hot ham and cheese on big hot pretzels. And not just any pretzels. But Bavarian pretzel sticks. And they do not have to have equal portions on each of them. Making them customizable for each person.
These delicious ham and cheese sandwiches are also nice to have during the football season. At home during the big game, during tailgating or at a super bowl party.
A great side dish to serve with a Bavarian pretzel ham and Swiss sandwich are these copycat Buffalo Wild Wings potato wedges.

Ingredients
For these sandwiches I chose to use frozen Bavarian pretzel sticks, Swiss cheese and black forest ham.
- Bavarian pretzels
- slices of black forest ham
- slices of Swiss cheese
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Step 1: Slice down the side of each Bavarian pretzel stick. Not cutting all the way through.
2. Step 2: Fill the open side of your pretzel with the desired amount of ham you would like.
- Step 3: Top your sandwiches off with the amount of cheese you would like. For cheese lovers you do not have to add equal pieces. Helping to make them however each person likes them. I used about a third of a slice of Swiss cheese for each.
- Step 4: Place foil and then Bavarian pretzel ham and Swiss sandwiches into crockpot. Place a sheet of foil in between layers of sandwiches. Cover and cook on low for one and a half hours.
Hint: I did not use the pretzel salt with this recipe. But you can add salt if you would like.
Substitutions
- Ham - You can substitute the slices of black forest ham with a ham that you prefer.
- Bun - Would you rather use a pretzel bun or soft pretzel rolls? Make sliders using them.
Variations
Looking to change up this recipe a bit? Here are a couple suggestions to try.
- Spicy - for a hint of spice, add Dijon mustard on top of the ham.
- Deluxe - just add lettuce, tomatoes and onion. You can also top with mustard or honey mustard.
- Tangy - for a tangy taste, top your sandwich off with sauerkraut.
Equipment
- crockpot
- knife
- aluminum foil
- plastic wrap
- airtight container
Storage
Wrap individual leftover Bavarian ham and cheese pretzel sandwiches in plastic wrap and place in an airtight container. Store in refrigerator for up to two to three days.
Frugal Tip
If you would like to use a variety of different types of ham without spending a lot of money, consider this. At the grocery store I found a few different types of two-ounce packages of ham for about $1.00 each. This can be a great savings.
