I had thought about making homemade laundry detergent for quite some time. The fact that I like to save money and also like to try out new things made it an easy decision for me. I wanted to make a simple recipe that could last a long time. That is when I tried making this homemade laundry detergent: 3 ingredients, Borax free! I like it and I save money.
I do still buy laundry detergent at the store at times. I just wanted to give a homemade one a try and I really like it. So, when prices go up is when I will opt to make our own laundry detergent more.
The ingredients and cost breakdown
- Soap-1 bar (4 oz) of Dial Gold bar soap .50
- Baking soda-1 cup .45
- Arm and Hammer washing soda-1 cup $1
This recipe made 32 tablespoons of 3 ingredient laundry detergent for a total of a $1.95. I used one tablespoon for small loads, 1 ½ tablespoons for medium loads and 2 tablespoons for large loads. This is what I found to work well, but it may differ for others.
- 32 small loads
- 22 medium loads
- 16 large loads
I felt this was a great price for the number of loads of laundry we could wash from it. I think this would also be a great option to try if you are having a no spend month and happen to run out of laundry detergent.
Dial gold bar soap
I have sensitive skin and a couple of years ago decided I would try out Dial Gold bar soap. I picked this one in particular to try for two reasons. The first being because someone shared how gentle on skin it is. And the second reason was because it is antibacterial. I have not stopped using it since. Then when I decided to try making homemade laundry detergent, I knew that I wanted to include this kind of soap in it. And the price is very affordable.
Baking soda
Another affordable ingredient to use when making homemade laundry detergent is baking soda. Not only does it work well as a laundry detergent booster, but it can also be used to remove tough stains and get rid of bad smells.
Washing soda
Arm and Hammer washing soda is another cost friendly ingredient to include in this recipe. Another big reason why I chose it is because it helps to remove stains and to soften water.
Directions
- Grate the Dial Gold bar soap.
- Place grated soap into a blender. (I put small amounts in at a time and used the pulse button. I found this to work best).
- Mix all 3 ingredients together well in a bowl.
- Then store your 3-ingredient laundry detergent into an airtight container.

Conclusion
Homemade laundry detergent is a great way to save money, and this recipe only calls for three ingredients. If you’re looking for an easy and affordable way to make your own detergent, give this recipe a try.
