It is almost that time of year again. Where you can dress up in costumes and enjoy all things scary. One scary part though can be the prices of some of the items for Halloween. Here are 4 chilling ways to save money for a spooky Halloween! No need to fear missing out on all the fun if you are wanting to not have to spend a lot of money for this fun holiday.
According to the National Retail Federation in 2020, money spent at Halloween tips the scales at over four billion dollars approximately each year. This tells me just how much fun Halloween can be to a lot of people. Myself included. It is a holiday I enjoy. Lets dive into our list of savings ideas.
1. Costumes
First on our list is costumes. You do not have to be a kid to enjoy the tradition of dressing up for this holiday. People of all ages can take part in this fun tradition. Unfortunately costumes can be expensive though. If a costume is over budget that your family member or yourself would like to wear, don't necessarily move on to the next costume idea just yet. Here are some things to consider trying first.
- Look and see what you have.
After determining what you would like to dress up as, look to see if you have anything that can be used for that costume. Take a look in your closets and drawers. See if there is anything that you could substitute for some parts of the costume. That could make it a little more unique, making yours one of a kind. One of my favorite costumes from using things I already had was a scarecrow.
- Borrow from a friend.
Ask around to see if someone you know has the costume you would like to wear. Maybe it is one that they have worn in the past. Possibly making it available for you to borrow. Or maybe they will even have something similar to it that you could borrow.
- Check your local thrift store.
Try looking at your local thrift store. Be sure to also check the aisles other than just the Halloween aisle. You could find all the pieces you need, but in different areas of the store.
- Make it for less
Whether you are crafty or not, think about making it yourself. This could be less expensive than buying it. Just take your time while searching for pieces to make it out of. You never know, you may pick up a new hobby along the way.
Although this may not help for this year, checking the after Halloween clearance can help you to score big discounts on next year's goods.
2. Candy
Next on our list is candy. Halloween is a time for candy galore. This can be a big expense if we are not careful and find deals. There are some ways to help us save money while purchasing candy for the little ghosts and goblins on trick or treat night.
- Buy it on sale days
Our local grocery store usually has a day or two in particular sometime before Halloween for deeply discounted candy. Some stores may not advertise this if they do offer it. Try calling your store to see if they offer sales like this and when they are. Be sure to set some time aside to go. I have saved quite a bit of money buying candy on these days.
- Use coupons
Many Sunday newspapers have coupon inserts in them. Clip the candy coupons to save even more when they are on sale. If you are not able to get your candy on sale, be sure to use coupons you have.
- Non holiday candy aisle
Be sure to check out the candy aisle that is not just for the holidays. You may be able to score great sales in this aisle as well. Remember to use your coupons too.
3. Decorations
Our third category on our list is decorations. It can be so much fun to decorate for Halloween. But it can be expensive too. There is decorating outside of the home as well as inside of the home. Do you want to decorate one or both? Do you want to a little bit or go all out? Any amount of decorating can be costly. There are some ways to help eliminate high costs on decorations.
- Shop your decorations
Do you already have some decorations from years past? Look through them to see if they are still in good condition. Are any of them what you would like to use this year? Could you repurpose any of them for something different this year?
- DIY
Consider making decorations yourself rather than buying them. There are so many ideas to choose from. Check out thrift stores for items to use to help get the most out of your money.
- Check out the Dollar Store
Don't forget about the Dollar stores. You can find some nice holiday decorations there too. Some may last for just a season. But only paying a dollar or two is still worth it. Some items you may be able to use again and again.
4. Pumpkins
Rounding out our list is pumpkins. I do enjoy going to the pumpkin patch. Though I sometimes wait to get some of our pumpkins at the grocery store. I have found great deals on pumpkins at our local grocery. Even as low as $3.00 for a great big pumpkin.
So I will buy one at the pumpkin patch to help support local business and then head over and get the rest at the grocery store when there is a good deal on them.
Conclusion
This can be such a fun and exciting time of year. Along with the cooler weather and changing of leaves, all the fun of Halloween makes fall so fun. Get creative with saving your money on costumes, candy, decorations and pumpkins with a little bit of planning. Please share with us how you will be saving money on these items. Wishing you all a safe and fun Halloween.
