Frugal Tip

I have found that when I buy a broccoli crown it has been less expensive than a head of broccoli. Depending on how much broccoli you want to prepare, this may be a perfect size to buy. With the crowns having shortened stems, it can also save a little time when preparing them.

How do you steam broccoli without a steamer?

Don’t let not having a steamer keep you from making this broccoli dish. There are a couple of other ways that you can steam broccoli. In fact, I do not always use a steamer. I also like the convenience of these methods too.

  • Stove top using a skillet.

On the stove top, I use a large skillet with water. This is the method I use for this recipe. Please see below including the recipe card.

  • Microwave safe dish.

In a microwave safe dish, add water and broccoli. Depending on how much broccoli you are preparing will determine how much water you will add. If you are adding a small amount, start out with a small amount of water for example. Cover with a microwave safe lid.

How long should you steam broccoli for?

In this recipe, I steam the broccoli for about eight minutes. If you prefer for it to be less soft, you can try steaming the broccoli for five minutes or so. It really depends on how soft or crunchy you would like for your broccoli to be.

Can I use frozen broccoli?

Yes, you can use frozen broccoli for this recipe. Consider that it may vary the steaming time if you use frozen.

How to store leftovers

I have found the best way to store leftover broccoli is in an airtight container. This helps to prevent other smells in your refrigerator or freezer from getting into it. If you plan to eat the leftovers within a couple of days, refrigeration works well. If longer than a couple of days, I would freeze it in a freezer safe airtight container. Whether you refrigerate or freeze your broccoli, I would let the broccoli cool down first. And a great thing about leftovers, is that you can serve this great side dish again.
